While other parts of Japan are experiencing extremely hot days, summer in Hokkaido is rather cool and comfortable. In particular, the northern part of Hokkaido is even cooler!
Cape Soya in Wakkanai is the northernmost point in Japan. Everyone takes pictures in front of the monument there.
Nearby, there’s a statue of Rinzo Mamiya, an explorer known for confirming that Karafuto (Sakhalin) is an island and for discovering the Mamiya Strait. You can even spot Hokkaido sika deer!
If you take a ferry from Wakkanai to Rebun Island, you can enjoy breathtaking natural scenery, i.e. Cape Sukai and Cape Sukoton, the northernmost point in Rebun Island.
In Rishiri Island, Mount Rishiri, 1,721 meters in elevation, selected as one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, can be viewed from various locations in the island.
Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress (now the Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita) visited Otatomari Swamp in 2018 and took a stroll on the walking trail.
You can really relax on these remote islands.
