Sosei East is located in the center of Sapporo, yet it is a place where people live and work in old buildings. This area is also called the downtown of Sapporo. The area has flourished as a distribution and industrial center since the early development days of Hokkaido, taking advantage of the Sosei River, and supported the modernization of Sapporo during the Meiji Era (1868-1912).
Hokkaido Jingu Tongu is located in the east of Sosei East, and was originally established as a winter worship site for the Hokkaido Jingu Shrine, formerly known as Sapporo Shrine located in Maruyama.
“Tongu” refers to the lodging place for the portable shrine procession. It is called as “Tongu-san” by the people of the town, and is a five-minute walk from Tanukikoji shopping arcade and Odori Park.
