Shima, Hokkaido Jingu Shrine, and Cherry trees

Shima Yoshitake, a leading official of the Kaitakushi (Hokkaido Development Commission), played a central role in developing Hokkaido and building Sapporo’s administrative capital.

Known as the “Father of Sapporo,” he designed its grid layout, oversaw infrastructure construction, and helped found both the city and Hokkaido Jingu Shrine.

He personally transported sacred objects to establish the shrine, and his legacy is honored through a statue, a local specialty “Hangansama” (grilled mochi) named after his job title, and the planting of cherry trees in the area.

If you visit Sapporo in mid-April, you can enjoy cherry blossoms at Hokkaido Shrine while eating Hangansama mochi.
