The name “Tsuki-samu” is written with the Japanese characters for “Moon” (月) and “Cold” (寒), but its origin is thought to come from the Ainu language, “ci-kisa-p”, which means “the place where fire was made by rubbing pieces of Japanese elm tree”, though there are several interpretations.
Don’t miss the beautiful stone lanterns at the nearby Tsukisamu Shrine—they add a lovely touch of tradition to the peaceful surroundings.
