It’s just the beginning of winter yet, but in mid-winter, (between December and March) various winter activities can be enjoyed here.
As we are blessed with a large amount of snow, skiing is a typical activity here.
There are many ski grounds where skiing is possible with reasonable prices.
If you don’t ski, horseback riding, snowmobiling, dog-sledding in the vast snowfield are interesting options.
Many winter festivals held in many places are quite attractive.
Sapporo Snow Festival, Ice Festival in Lake Shikotsu known as Hyoto Matsuri Festival, Sounkyo Hyobaku Matsuri Festival that is another beautiful ice festival, are some of the spectacular winter festivals.
Watching drift ice in the Sea of Okhotsk, lovely penguins’ walk in the snow at Otaru Aquarium and at Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa City, taking open-air hot spring bath while viewing Mt. Yotei are just some examples you can enjoy in winter.
Four seasons are quite distinct in Hokkaido, and there are activities and sceneries that are possible to enjoy only in winter.
